Oh it’s all just a bit of fun, isn’t it (Picture: Luke Dyson)Does it sound cliche to say I had the time of my life at Secret Cinema’s instalment of Dirty Dancing? Look, the adage fits. The iconic 80s movie, which shot the likes of Jennifer Grey and the late, great, Patrick Swayze to hip-gyrating levels of fame, has been reimagined as an immersive outdoor summer experience to join the likes of recent Secret Cinema alum including Romeo + Juliet and Casino Royale and, sure, while I didn’t carry a watermelon, it’s juicy fun. With its final week of shows in our midst, I’ll be careful not to give too much away, but it’s not a spoiler to confirm it’s one big cha cha cha into summer via the wonder of Kellerman’s, with more swing skirts than you can poke a stick at. But comparing this to previous events held by Secret Cinema, how does one bring the Catskills to a big field in [redacted]? Well, as soon as you step into the outdoor space (yes, outdoors, bring a picnic blanket and prep for any weather) you’re met with a cacophony of kitschy 60s sights, sounds and sets. Want to take in a dance class? Head over here. What about a game of mini golf? A talent show? Right this way – pops of action are dotted all around. Want to stand by and watch with a cocktail in your hand, musing you’d totally smoke the sack race? There’s no pressure to join in and, should you want to take in the pearl-clutching moves in one of the dance halls, there is particular attention drawn to consent, with signs dotted around reiterating that unwanted touching – seeing as we are dealing with some, er, dirty dancing here – is forbidden. Ask around to find secret spots (Picture: Luke Dyson) Always offer to carry a watermelon (Picture: Luke Dyson)When it comes to the set, the detail is wildly impressive, from Johnny’s black Chevrolet to the watermelons (go on, offer to carry one) they did well to transplant a New York country club to London, with even bar staff greeting you with enthusiastic, if not a little sickly, American accents. And for those who manage to keep their ears to the ground and ask around – as anyone who’s taken in a Secret Cinema before should know, hitting up the costumed cast members going about their business can pay big dividends in hidden experiences – there is some underground action to be had, tucked away from the main event. Still, if you hadn’t caught wind of any secret happenings afoot you may feel the extracurricular activities of the event were a little ‘meh’ compared to the spy-thrill of the Casino Royale Secret Cinema, for instance. However, I’m putting that down to Dirty Dancing’s plot and real lack of opportunity to go big in that arena. What Dirty Dancing has over other events is energy: this film is made for a screening format like Secret Cinema (with clear efforts to make the showing more inclusive, with a sign language interpreter on stage in parts). You’ll soon find yourself in a field of hundreds bashing out Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes with wild abandon, before joining a throng of professional dancers for the final number in scenes so attention-grabbing you kind of forget Jennifer Grey is being tossed into the air. Take it before you head inside (there are props before the gates for this purpose) because as soon as you cross that ticket threshold your phone is locked in a pouch that’ll be opened only when you leave.
